Young Orchestral Musicians from all parts of Australia are applying to the prestigious award. Vladimir Ashkenazy to head high powered judging panel for THE MATTHEW KREL PRIZE FOR ORCHESTRAL EXCELLENCE up to six young Australian musicians have the chance to share in $40,000 to further their musical careers
The Matthew Krel Prize for Orchestral Excellence has been established in memory of Matthew Krel, the founding conductor of the SBS Youth Orchestra, who died suddenly in May 2009. The prize will be awarded annually. Young, classically trained musicians are invited to send in a 15 minute DVD that shows-off their superior technical skills; mature interpretive abilities; and includes a piece to-camera where they talk about their approach to the musical work performed. Musicians can register at the Prize Website . The filmed material of the winners will be used in a national television program which will screen on STVDIO and SBS Television. Speaking at a memorial concert for Matthew Krel at the Sydney Town Hall on Sunday April 18, Ian Hamilton, the Hon. Secretary of the SBS Youth Orchestra said: “For 21 years, Maestro Krel was a fierce advocate for the promotion of music to Australia’s youth and this prize will see the continuation of his life’s work. We’re excited about this opportunity. To be able to offer financial support to young, talented musicians is a great pleasure.
